New Business School students join SIFE

A new step in the direction of responsible entrepeneurship

Newsfacts:
  • Boardmembers signed with SIFE on Wednesday, September 28
  • Currently eight vacancies in the board left
  • SIFE is active in over 40 countries

Students of New Business School will be joining the annual competition promoted by SIFE (Students In Free Enterprise), a global non–profit organization that stimulates university students to create economic opportunities for others.
Last September 28, a recently formed student delegation, which will represent New Business School in the contest, presented itself to the student body, staff and lecturers. Until now, five positions of the member board were taken, but there are still eight vacancies to be filled by motivated students who want to help to create community-based projects for others while further developing themselves. Once the delegation board has been completed, weekly sessions will be organized enabling these students to work out their ideas into suitable projects. Board members will attend regular training sessions offered by SIFE.

According to the dean Timo Timmerman, the aim of SIFE corresponds clearly with the values of the school: responsible business, creativity and new entrepreneurship. Our students will be encouraged to develop new business ideas for people in need. These ideas will be presented during the nationals, which will be held in May 2012. New Business School students will compete against university students from all over the country in a quest to be promoted to the next level: the World Cup 2012, to be held in Washington D.C.

SIFE

SIFE is active in over 40 countries, mobilizing university students to create economic opportunity for others while discovering their own potential. Working in partnership with business and higher education, SIFE stimulates students around the world to use their knowledge to address real world issues in their communities.
SIFE students form teams on their university and develop outreach projects that teach market economics, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, personal success skills and business ethics. Each year they present their projects at competitions which are held in every participating country; the winners go on to compete with each other in the SIFE World Cup.
SIFE was first organized as a project of the National Leadership Institute in the United States in 1975, grown out of a concern about the attitudes displayed by university students toward business and the very idea of free enterprise.
In September 2002 the SIFE World Cup Competition was first held in Amsterdam, with 23 participating countries. As a result of this SIFE The Netherlands was set up early 2003 sponsored by Heineken, KPMG and Unilever, and Dutch National Competitions have been held every year.

Nyenrode is the only private university in the Netherlands. In 1946, captains of industry from leading Dutch corporations as KLM, Shell, Unilever, Philips and Akzo, took the initiative to start an institute where an action-inclined, internationally focused generation of new business leaders would be educated. Nyenrode’s ambition is to deepen the knowledge of our internationally oriented, carefully selected students towards sustainable leaders, robust accountants and agile and creative entrepreneurs. For business, by business has been our motto from the day our institute was established. It still defines the university and assures that practical relevance is of main importance to our faculty.

New Business School, Amsterdam (part of Nyenrode Business Universiteit) opened in 2006, in cooperation with the University of Westminster, and offers an international Bachelor degree in New Business. Both academic development and professional development are central to the programme: it represents the third path in higher education in the Netherlands that allows students to develop themselves into creative and responsible business men and women. Projects in India, Ethiopia and China and a semester in London contribute to the student’s international ambitions.
